The lake is notable for its pristine condition and serenity. As a feeder for the Scituate Reservoir – the drinking water supply for most of the state – its use is tightly controlled and limited to residents and their guests. With the exception of small craft using silent, battery-powered trolling motors, powerboats are not allowed. As a result, the lake is very clean and quiet. In midsummer you might hear children playing in the water from properties across the lake, but most of the sounds will be songbirds, bullfrogs, Canada geese and owls. You will probably see the resident great blue heron as you sit out on the beach, or catch sight of one of the lake's giant turtles as it dives to avoid your approaching canoe. It's very likely that the only people you will see will be paddling along the shore, fishing for wide-mouth bass. Ponaganset Reservoir Dam is of earthen construction, concrete. Its height is 26 feet with a length of 635 feet. Maximum discharge is 130 cubic feet per second. Its capacity is 3657 acre feet. Normal storage is 2277 acre feet. It drains an area of 2.1 square miles.
