Long Pond is a 211-acre cold water pond in Plymouth, Massachusetts, east of Myles Standish State Forest. A paved boat ramp provided by the Public Access Board with ample parking spaces is easily accessible from Route 3. It has an average depth of 46-feet and a maximum depth at 100-feet, making it one of the deepest natural ponds in the state. It is fed by groundwater and inlet from Little Long Pond, and composed of sand and rubble making the water clear and having excellent transparency at 18-feet. The 3.3 miles of shoreline are moderately developed with year round homes and summer camps. Development is heaviest in the cove located in the southeastern corner. Housed are also dispersed along the southern side of the side of the large western cove, and to the north near the rest of the pond, except for the eastern shore where there is very little development. Long Pond is stratified in the summer months and contains a large volume of cold well-oxygenated water. As a result it is one of the best ponds in the state for salmonid habitat and has a long history of trout and salmon stocking. This 211 acre pond is over 90 feet deep in several places and is about one and one half miles long. The shore line is moderately built out but fortunately not very densely. Long Pond is mesotrophic (it contains moderate quantities of nutrients and is moderately productive for aquatic animal and plant life). The state boat ramp makes it one of the more heavily used ponds in Plymouth. Fishing is good. Sailboat races take place every summer weekend. Unfortunately there is significant degradation from stormwater runoff shunted to the pond from the relatively dense 200 house Plymouth Estates residential development to the north.
