Lake Winthrop is a 131-acre Great Pond. It was originally called "Dean Winthrop's Pond" and used as a boundary marker for hisland. Dean was the son of John Winthrop. The town history states that the Nipmuck tribe, a clan of the Algonquian Indians, lived on the lake's southwestern shore in the village of Musquit near present-day LakeGrove Cemetery. This is very near the site of the Morse family farm. The lake was then called Wennakeening, meaning "smile of the great spirit" or "pleasant smile".

Today, Lake Winthrop offers fishing, kayaking, and swimming. In season 5 episode 4 of the sitcom "Cheers" Woody, Normand and Cliff go on a fishing outing to Lake Winthrop. There are two public beaches located on opposite shores. They are the Stodard Park and Beach on the East shore and Pleasure Point Parkand Beach on the West shore.

Pleasure Point Beach is a lakefront park that includes a swimming area with a sandy beach, playground, picnic table, and portable restrooms during the summer season. A boat ramp is at the far end of the parking lot (no motorized boats). There are approximately 20 parking spaces. Inseason beach sticker or day pass required.
