Rex Lake is 1 of 8 lakes connected together in Akron, OH which make up "Portage Lakes". Boggy areas associated with the Portage Lake State Park, that are remnants of glacial activity, bring unique plant and wildlife to the area. Residents can enjoy beautiful scenery and a large selection of boating, fishing and other recreational activities at Portage Lakes, giving a great opportunity to experience lakefront living at its finest.

Lake / Beach / Marinas – The 8 lakes combine for a total of 2,034 acres of water (approximately). The depth of the waters change from lake to lake but the average runs anywhere from 10 to 50 feet. There is a 400 HP limit across all the lakes and jet skis are allowed, however there is no wake allowed at any of the lakes except for Turkeyfoot and the East Reservoir. Boaters also can enjoy kayaking, canoeing, tubing, water-skiing and all sorts of recreational activities on the water. Lake Turkeyfoot also has a 900-foot public swimming beach and Rex Lake and Cottage Grove Lake both have designated swim areas for boaters as well. There are almost half a dozen marinas spread across the lakes offering fuel, boat rentals and equipment for all types of recreation.

Offshore Amenities – As a state park, Portage Lakes have several offshore activities to entertain the whole family including an 18-hole disc golf course and a dog park for man’s best friend. There are also opportunities for sportsmen as anglers will find catfish, walleye and muskie at the lake, as well as the chance to hunt waterfowl in season. There are several picnic areas throughout the lakes, as well as three large shelter houses available for reservation. Residents will also find several hiking / walking trails including the 5-mile Shoreline Trail, and a portion of the Buckeye Trail that runs along the east shore of the Nimisila Reservoir. Volleyball courts, horseshoe pits and other playground equipment can be found through the park. And on top of all that there is an observatory within the park run by the Astronomy Club of Akron available for use.

Nearby Activities – There is also no shortage of activities around the lakes for residents. The Perkins Mansion and the Home of John Brown are both well maintained historical sites located within the county for history buffs to visit. The pro football hall of fame is located in nearby Canton. And there are several more state parks nearby that provide additional boating, hiking, and nature based recreational activities including Quail Hollow State Park, and Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
